The Background
The East Africa Philanthropy Network in 2011-2013 conducted a regional study on various matters relating to the establishment of an e-giving platform in the region. At the time, the technological tools that we witness today in the e-giving and mobile giving environment were already in place.
The variations that have come about with the passing of time relate mainly to the innovative use of the technologies and their malleability as opposed to new tools emerging.
Supported by the Aga Khan Development Network and TechSoup Global, EAPN undertook various studies that largely mapped the existing environment from a technological, regulatory, social and economic perspective. From the studies, EAPN deduced that the environment would be conducive to the establishment of the e-giving platform. The feasibility studies largely later informed the Yetu Initiative that was undertaken by the Aga Khan Foundation, Nairobi office in partnership with the USAID. This did not however lead to the establishment of the e-giving platform as originally conceptualized.
Ten or so years after the platform was conceptualized, EAPN is now imbued with the desire to establish the e-giving platform in order to provide, at inception, a gateway for East African social enterprises and causes to receive global support through a robust, locally led and managed giving platform. The vision is to avail the platform for use all over Africa, within the five years of its launch.
Recognising the robust membership scope of the EAPN, the e-giving platform will rely largely on the members, and partners to target social enterprises and causes fit for on-boarding into the platform.
